Abstract:
SP46 Proceedings from a combined "paper symposium" and "workshop session" on concrete proportioning technology held at an ACI annual convention. Nine papers presented at the paper symposium deal with proportioning techniques and technology for application in pumping concrete, gapgraded aggregate concrete, mass concrete, proportioning with admixtures, fIy ash, and other pozzolans, and high strength concrete. Four papers from the workshop session cover history of proportioning, normal weight concrete, and no slump concrete.

A discussion of the effect of purposefully entrained air on the properties of concrete. Factors which affect the entrainment of air in concrete such as cement, sand, and mix temperature are discussed. Strength reductions to be expected and suggested air contents as related to maximum size aggregate are shown.

The history of concrete mix proportioning starts with the "recipe" for manufacture of the first batch of concrete. The complex nature of concrete contributed to the wide variety of methods for arriving at the "best mix." . . .Three ACI standards are in use today which include developments in normal weight concrete, lightweight concrete and no-slump concrete.

The Recommended Practice for Selecting Proportions for Structural Lightweight Concrete (ACI 211.2-69) presents methods for designing structural lightweight concrete mixes, emphasizing their adjustment by employing a specific gravity factor. This in turn enables calculation of effective displaced volumes for the lightweight aggregate fractions in the mixture. Developed via a pycnometer, these factors are presented as a continuous function for a range of aggregate moisture contents. Also included in the Standard are adjustment guides as well as field control pointers.

Described are types of pozzolans available for use, effects of these in concrete with respect to various important areas of interest and proportioning procedures whereby desired properties can be achieved by using pozzolans in proper relationship with other ingredients all within the framework of ACI 211.1-70 "Recommended Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal Weight Concrete." No slump concrete is not considered.
