Scale models are becoming increasingly more important in research on structural concrete and are also being used quite widely in the design problem. Presenting a justification for the use of models in these areas the authors discuss the advantages and disadvantages of structural models in general.

Comparision of results of full-and model-scale explosive tests of cubicles and other similar reinforced concrete protective structures have shown that a reasonable estimate of the blast-resistant capabilities of these structures can be obtained from model tests as small as one-tenth scale. However, the results of the above tests have also indicated that care must be exercised in the preparation of the model and the test site as well as in the performance of the test in order to achieve the test data desired.

Classified under 21 section titles the 159 references from 186 authors included in this bibliography have been selected as representative of the material available in each category within the broad field of model testing. Both early and current references have been included to show how the art of model testing has advanced, and both detailed and cursory studies have been included to show how the art varies today. This bibliography is selective rather than all-inclusive.

Techniques and materials for the construction and testing of models of concrete structures are discussed in this paper. Both elastic and ultimate strength models are considered. Elastic models are treat briefly. Time effects in commonly used plastic materials and complications in instrumentation are discussed. Materials to simulate both the steel and the concrete in ultimate strength models are discussed and references to detailed investigations are given. Fabrication, instrumenation and testing methods are described.
