Abstract:
A simplification to the ACI 318-08 strut-and-tie model provisions for deep beam shear design is proposed. Based on the truss analogy, the simplification would allow eliminating the check for stresses in struts and nodal zones if four conditions are satisfied. The proposed simplification should not be seen as a new idea, but as the use of an existing tool that has passed the test of time when applied to structural design using the truss analogy. Results contained in a recently published database support its use.
