Young Professionals Networking Mixer
On August 27, 2019, the Southern California Chapter –
ACI (ACI SoCal) hosted a Young Professionals Mixer at
the Angel City Brewery in downtown Los Angeles, CA. This
event was the first Young Professionals Mixer hosted by ACI
SoCal. Anyone who identified as a young professional or
young professional at heart was invited to attend.
About 80 people attended the event, and most of them were
within the first decade of their careers. Many of the attendees
were new members and attending their first ACI SoCal event.
The group also included students, first-time ACI SoCal sponsors,
and those looking to learn more about ACI and ACI SoCal.
Two drink tickets and a meal ticket were included with
the $15 registration fee, allowing attendees to sample the
brewery’s seasonal finest and enjoy a quick dinner from a taco
truck. Due to the success of the event, ACI SoCal is planning

About 80 people attended ACI SoCal’s inaugural Young
Yarmouk University Student Chapter – ACI
Hosts a Concrete Boat Competition
The Yarmouk University Student Chapter – ACI was
officially recognized by ACI as the first ACI Student
Chapter in Jordan in fall 2019. The school’s civil
engineering department celebrated the occasion by hosting
a Concrete Boat Competition. The event was attended by
the Vice President of Yarmouk University, the Dean of the
Hijjawi Faculty for Engineering Technology, more than
20 faculty members, and over 300 students from the civil
Fifteen teams comprising over 50 students participated in
the competition. The main objective for the competitors was
to prepare and implement a lightweight/foamed concrete
mixture and prepare a model boat that would float on water.
Student teams used several additives/admixtures to achieve
a lighter weight boat. The boats were evaluated based on
appearance/shape and the maximum load that could be carried.
