Civil Engineering Students Gather for Olympic
Games in Mexico
The 2019 Ninth National Concrete Competition took place
on May 2, 2019, in the city of Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico,
during the XXXV OlimpiANEIC (National Olympic Games
for Civil Engineering Students), hosted by Universidad
Autónoma de Coahuila, Unidad Torreón, May 1-5, 2019. The
Ninth National Concrete Competition was organized by
CEMEX, the Asociación Nacional de Estudiantes de
Ingeniería Civil (National Association of Civil Engineering
Students ANEIC Mx), ACI, the Instituto Mexicano del
Concreto Sustentable (Mexican Sustainable Concrete
Institute), and CANDE Ingenieros.
Competing teams were instructed to create 100 x 200 mm
(4 x 8 in.) concrete cylinders with the best electrical resistivity
possible. To promote durability and sustainability, students
had to use the highest amount of alternative materials possible
while not exceeding a concrete density of 2200 kg/m3 (137 lb/ft3)
in a saturated surface-dry (SSD) state. Fifty-two students
participated from 12 different universities in Mexico.
All category winners received certificates for their
participation. The first-place winner in the Global
Development category was awarded an all-expenses-paid trip
for one member of the team to the ACI FRP Composites
Competition on October 20, 2019, at The ACI Concrete
Convention and Exposition – Fall 2019 in Cincinnati, OH.
