KAI appointed Matt Westphal as President of KAI Design
and KAI Engineering. He is responsible for leading,
managing, and maintaining accountability for the companies.
Westphal will travel between offices in Atlanta, GA; Dallas,
TX; and St. Louis, MO. Prior to joining KAI, Westphal was
President of Hospital Designers, Inc., a subsidiary of HBE. He
received his BS in engineering with an emphasis on structures
from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana,
IL, and his MS in civil engineering and MBA from Southern
Illinois University at Edwardsville, Edwardsville, IL.
Honors and Awards
Lawrence L. Sutter, FACI, received the Award of Merit
from ASTM International Committee C09, Concrete and
Concrete Aggregates. The award recognizes an individual
member’s high level of service and participation in committee
activities. It includes the honorary title of Fellow. Sutter is
Chair of ACI Committee 232, Fly Ash in Concrete, and a
member of ACI Committees 130, Sustainability of Concrete;
211, Proportioning Concrete Mixtures; 221, Aggregates; 225,
Hydraulic Cement; 242, Alternative Cements; and others. He
is a Professor at Michigan Technological University,
Houghton, MI. He received his BS in metallurgical
engineering, his MS in environmental engineering, and his
PhD in civil engineering from Michigan Tech.
The Deep Foundations Institute (DFI) Educational Trust
appointed Jonathan Huff to its Board of Trustees. He will
serve as an At-Large Trustee through December 31, 2020.
Huff is a Design Engineer/Project Manager and Estimator for
Goettle, where his responsibilities include engineering design,
estimating, project management, and relationship building.
His areas of expertise include augered cast-in-place piles,
drilled displacement piles, micropiles, caissons, and tied-back
earth retention systems. Huff is Chair of the DFI Augered
Cast-in-Place (ACIP) Pile Committee. He received his BS and
MS in civil engineering from the University of Kentucky,
Willie M. NeSmith, former Chief Geotechnical Engineer
for Berkel & Company Contractors, was selected as the
2019-2020 DFI Traveling Lecturer. He is available, on
request of DFI, to present lectures through August 31, 2020.
Lectures will be case histories focused on geotechnical
engineering and ground improvement. NeSmith worked for
25 years as a Consulting Geotechnical Engineer on projects
in the United States, the Middle East, and Africa. He began
to specialize in deep foundations in 1990 and joined Berkel &
Company in 1999 after serving as a consultant for
implementation of Berkel’s displacement pile system. He
has authored over 20 professional publications and is a past
member of the DFI ACIP Pile Committee. He received his
BS in civil engineering from the Georgia Institute of
Technology, Atlanta, GA.
Terex Bid-Well appointed Jorge Cervera as Regional
Sales Manager for Latin America, Japan, and the western
United States. In this role, Cervera will support Terex Bid-
Well products and services, working to meet customers’
equipment needs and developing new growth opportunities in
these areas. Cervera previously worked as Director of Global
Accounts for AGCO Corporation, where he led all global
commercial and strategic relationships with AGCO’s most
complex and critical global accounts in the Americas, Europe,
Africa, the Middle East, and Asia Pacific.
Benjamin J. Kirk joined the Coleman Law Firm,
Minneapolis, MN. Kirk’s practice is focused on construction
and real estate, particularly on construction defect litigation.
He has experience representing general contractors,
subcontractors, developers, architects, and engineers in
transactional matters and litigation. Kirk has been practicing
law since 2012 and is admitted to the bar in Minnesota and
