Abstract:
Eugène Freyssinet is widely known as an important figure in the development of prestressed concrete. However, his contribution to engineering is immensely larger than the development of a specific technique. This review of his work shows that the development was part of his lifelong quest to use materials to their utmost capacity. As evidence, the author discusses Freyssinet’s experiences with arch bridges and how they contributed to his understanding of creep, eventually leading to his insight that high-strength steel is needed for permanent prestressing. Freyssinet’s prestressed concrete products, projects, and technologies are also discussed.
