ACI Design Award
This award recognizes advanced concepts and techniques applied to a specific design project. Awards are given to the author or coauthors of the paper and to the engineer or engineering firm responsible for the design. Institute membership is not required, peer review is not required, and the award may be given annually, but not necessarily.
From 1997-2000, the award was named the Structural Engineering Award and was given for advanced concepts and techniques related to structural engineering. Up until 1997, the award was named the Maurice P. van Buren Structural Engineering Award and was given for a completed outstanding concrete building project incorporating advanced structural design concepts, advanced structural design techniques, or both, described in a paper published by the Institute. Recipients are awarded a certificate.

Wason Medal for Materials Research
The Wason Medal for Materials Research was founded in 1917 by Leonard C. Wason, past president of ACI. It may be bestowed annually, but not necessarily each year, on a member or members of the Institute reporting, in a peer-reviewed paper published by the Institute, original research work on concrete materials and their use, or a discovery that advances the state of knowledge of materials used in the construction industry. This award is restricted to members of the Institute, although all authors are eligible if any author is an ACI member. Prior to 1971, this medal was awarded to research papers dealing with any phase of Institute interests. The medal is bronze.

Charles S. Whitney Medal
The Charles S. Whitney Medal for engineering development was founded in 1961 by Ammann and Whitney, to honor the memory of Charles S. Whitney. It may be bestowed once in any year, but not necessarily each year, for noteworthy engineering development work in concrete design or construction. The recognition may be extended to a firm or agency alone, or to an individual.
Any outstanding engineering development work contributing importantly to the advancement of the sciences or arts of concrete design or construction through development of general engineering practice or through application in specific noteworthy projects, is eligible.
When nominating a person or firm for an ACI Personal Award, the biographical form must be filled out, including the wording for a suggested citation, and returned to diane.pociask@concrete.org. If you would like to nominate a firm, please include corporate history, a corporate overview, list of projects completed (with adequate description, i.e., innovative usage of concrete and locations), photographs of same, and any other information you feel is pertinent. If submitting color photographs, or any other material that cannot be adequately photocopied, please develop six sets. Upon receipt of the above data, it will be forwarded to the ACI Personal Awards Committee for its consideration.
Click here to download a Word document of the Nomination Form.
Decisions are made in the spring and presented to the ACI Board of Direction at the Fall Convention for approval. Awards are presented to awardees at the annual convention the following spring. Therefore, all nominations must be submitted by February 15, 2010, to be considered for awards in 2011.

ACI Commemorative Lecture Series
The R. E. Davis Lecture Series began in 1972 and was replaced by the Phil M. Ferguson Lecture Series in 1987. The ACI Commemorative Lecture Series replaced the expired Phil M. Ferguson Lecture Series in the fall of 1998. The lectures are funded through ACI's General Accounts.
The ACI Commemorative Lecture Series was established on a multi-year cycle to commemorate prominent deceased members. Each year, a speaker is selected by a board committee appointed by ACI's president, with the lecture being presented at the following fall convention. The first Commemorative Lecture Series (1998-2000) was in honor of George Winter. The second Commemorative Lecture Series (2001-2005) was in honor of Lewis H. Tuthill. The Third Commemorative Lecture Series is in honor of Hardy Cross.
The lecture subjects are chosen by the speaker and can relate to the entire range of Institute interest. The only qualification requirement for a speaker is that he or she is outstanding in the concrete field. An appropriate plaque is given to each speaker as a memento.
