Dealing with Floor Moisture and Flatness Problems

On April 17-18 2003, representatives from the construction industry, flooring manufacturers, specification bodies, and technical societies met in Chicago—not to argue responsibility for floor problems, but to work together to solve the problems. One of the meeting sponsors was the Strategic Development Council (SDC) of ACI's Concrete Research and Education Foundation. The driving force for the meeting was the desire to reduce the high costs associated with callbacks, claims, and litigation by developing methods for producing better floors. Now you can benefit from the resulting discussions of this Inter-Industry Working Group on Concrete Floor Issues.

This report describes common floor problems and outlines several approaches to short-term and long-term solutions for the problems. It's both a concise summary of current knowledge and a road map for increasing the knowledge base. A key issue is improving communication about the problem so all construction team members—especially design professionals, general contractors, and construction managers can work together in implementing solutions.
