ACI FOUNDATION AND U.S. BUREAU OF RECLAMATION TEAM UP FOR CORROSION PREVENTION RESEARCH

Three year project focuses on research to prevent corrosion in concrete
reinforcing steel

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. (Oct. 29, 2009) - The ACI Foundation, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) recently signed an agreement with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation to collaborate on a research project on the performance of concrete reinforcing steel corrosion prevention and mitigation technologies.

The agreement was signed earlier this month during the fall session of the concrete industry’s Strategic Development Council (SDC). Claude Bedard, chair of the ACI Foundation, and Kurt von Fay, of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, signed the agreement on behalf of the two organizations. The ACI Foundation has assigned its council, SDC, to work with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on this project.

The $250,000 research project will focus on the development and evaluation of a protocol for measuring the performance of various concrete reinforcing steel corrosion prevention and mitigation technologies. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation will direct the project, perform laboratory testing, and prepare reports detailing the test results. This research coincides with SDC’s Vision 2020 Initiative, which focuses on creating a strategic and tactical plan to advance and improve the concrete repair, protection, and strengthening industry.

“The ACI Foundation is glad to be working with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation on this important research on corrosion prevention and mitigation technologies,” said Claude Bedard, chair of the ACI Foundation. “The research that will be conducted in Phase One of this joint project will directly benefit the concrete repair and protection industry, and it is planned that the results of this project will provide an industry-wide protocol for testing and evaluation.”
