Application Requirements and Instructions
The following criteria apply to all fellowship applicants. The complete application requirements and directions can be found on the application itself.
- All ACI Foundation Fellowship applicants must be nominated by a faculty member who is also an ACI member before the student is able to receive an official application. Faculty members: To nominate a student, send an email to scholarships@concrete.org with your ACI member number, and the name, university, and email address of the student you wish to nominate.
- The student must be considered a full-time undergraduate or graduate student as defined by the college or university during the award year. Applications will be accepted from anywhere in the world but study must take place in the United States or Canada during the award year.
- All applicants must be proficient in the English language. If English is not your native language, a written statement must be attached to the application attesting to this proficiency.
- The application package (see below for details) should be emailed to scholarships@concrete.org. The application, resume and essay should be sent together in one e-mail package. Hard copies of applications, resumes, and essays will not be accepted. Please be sure that your name is on every piece of material submitted. ACI staff does not contact applicants upon receipt of their application materials or contact applicants if materials are missing from submittals. The deadline for all application materials is 11:59 p.m. EST on October 30, 2009.
Application Package
For your application packet to be considered for this award, each of the following pieces of information must be submitted by the deadline indicated:
- Completed 2010-2011 application form: The application form must be typed. Handwritten applications will not be accepted.
- Resume: Any resume more than one-page will not be accepted.
- Essay: There is a 500 word maximum for essays. Your name must be on the first page of the essay, and all scheduled classes for balance of academic year must be included.
- Two Online Reference Forms: Please click here for the Online Reference Forms. Online Reference Forms are statements of evaluation of the applicant, in terms of potential for growth, character, leadership capacity, and career interest, which are required from two evaluators. One online reference form must be from your faculty nominator. We ask that the other be from an employer, if possible. All Online Reference Forms must be submitted in English. Only the Online Reference Form will be accepted. Mailed, emailed, or faxed letters of recommendation will not be accepted. Do not include more than the required two Online Reference Forms. Only the first two Online Reference Forms received will be accepted.
- Official Transcripts: All undergraduate and graduate transcripts from all universities attended during those years are required. Transcripts are only acceptable under the following conditions:
- All transcripts must be original and official documents. Unofficial transcripts, copies of transcripts, faxed, or e-mailed transcripts are not acceptable.
- All transcripts must either be mailed directly from the university or mailed by the student in a sealed envelope with a university stamp over the seal. Transcripts should be sent to: Lacey Jones, American Concrete Institute, 38800 Country Club Drive, Farmington Hills, MI 48331.
- All transcripts must be in English or accompanied by a translated version as well as an explanation of the grading scale if different from the 4.0 scale used in the U.S.
- If transcripts sent to ACI have a different last name than what appears on your application (i.e. maiden name), be sure to note it in parentheses on the name line of the application.
- Internship Requirement Agreement: Applicants for ACI Foundation Fellowships requiring internships must indicate acknowledgement and agreement to fulfill the internship requirement on the application form in the space provided. Internships must be served the summer before the award year.
Recipient Selection Process Requirements
Finalists chosen for consideration of ACI Foundation Fellowships must agree to attend Sunday of the Spring 2010 ACI Convention to be interviewed. Travel/hotel arrangements will be made through and paid for by the ACI Foundation. Each finalist will be advanced nominal funds for expected travel-related expenses. Fellowship recipients will be notified of their awards after the Annual ACI Convention held each spring.
Important Note to Fellowship Applicants If you meet the requirements of the ACI Foundation Scholarships, you are encouraged to also apply for them. A separate application must be filled out and submitted. Only one set of transcripts and reference forms are necessary for all ACI Foundation Fellowships and Scholarships. If you submit both applications, your graduate scholarship application will be reviewed and considered only in the event that you do not receive an ACI Foundation Fellowship. You must submit all applications by the deadline.
All ACI Foundation Fellowships can be withdrawn for failure to comply with any of the items above. Fellowship awardees are required to submit a written report near the end of their fellowship period describing the value of the Fellowship to their development and to their preparation for their chosen career after graduation.
