ACI Art of Concrete Competition

The objectives of the competition are to explore the artistic nature of concrete; to display the varieties, form, function, and beauty of concrete; and attract participation from a
broad group of students outside of engineering programs.

First, Second, and Third Prizes will be awarded to the individuals with the HIGHEST FINAL SCORE as defined in Section 5. First, Second, and Third place entries will each be awarded a certificate of recognition, will be recognized in Concrete International magazine if space allows, and will be recognized on ACI's website. In addition, the First Place participant will receive a $500 award, Second Place will receive $200, and Third Place will receive $100.

1. The Challenge

  1. To produce a work of art that exemplifies the central theme: “Art of Concrete.”
  2. To display the form, function, and/or beauty of concrete through a work of art.

2. Student Participant

  1. Each work of art must be completed by an individual student participant.
  2. Participation is limited to students currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program.  Undergraduate or graduate students on cooperative or internship work assignment are eligible to compete.  A student may not submit more than one entry.
  3. Each participant must submit registration forms Part 1 and Part 2 online to be eligible to participate. Forms must be submitted prior to the specified deadlines in Section 6. 
  4. The student must sign and submit a Statement of Originality certifying that the work of art is his/her original work as part of the Part 1 online submittal.

3. Medium

The following mediums will be permitted:

  1. Sculpture
  2. Painting
  3. Drawing
  4. Photography
  5. Scale model

The work of art shall be of such size and shape that it can be readily displayed without significant support and not exceed 48” in any dimension.  A maximum weight of 150 lbs will also be enforced.  All submittals are planned to be displayed on tables spread around the convention area along with the placard detailed in section 5a.  Paintings, drawings, and photos will be placed on the same tables for viewing. 

4. Judging

  1. Three (3) judges will be appointed by the Chair of Committee S 801 in collaboration with the Chairperson of the Dallas Convention Committee.
  2. Judges may include artists, architects, or engineers.   
  3. The judges will review Part 1 submittals and select the 20 most qualified works to participate in the convention competition. Selection will in part be based qualitatively on the judging categories below in addition to the number and type of submittals received and the order in which they are received.
  4. The judges will determine whether or not the rules have been followed by each participant and will judge the work of art for its merit.
  5. The decision of the judges will be final, and appeals will not be considered.

5. Evaluation

  1. Each accepted entry (maximum of 20) will be on display in visible areas of the conference. Included with the display will a placard indicating an assigned number from 1 to 20 (for voting purposes), the student’s name, university, and a brief abstract submitted by the student regarding the work of art. This abstract will be completed on the Part 1 form submitted prior to the event. The placard will be created by the convention committee prior to display.
  2. Each conference participant will have the chance to vote one time for their favorite work of art using voting buttons on a website that can be accessed from the internet. Only one vote per conference attendee will be counted. Voters will be required to enter their name as part of the voting submittal.
  3. Voting by conference participants will be closed on Monday March 19 at 10:00 a.m. These votes will be counted and the percentage of popular vote will be assessed for each work of art.
  4. Final score will equal the total judge points (300 total possible) plus the percentage of popular vote (100 possible).
  5. Winners will be the participants with the highest final score as totaled by the equation below. Winners will be announced at the student luncheon on Monday March 19 at 12:00 p.m. Participants need not be present to win.

6. Submitting the Entry and Supporting Materials

  1. Advance Online Registration is required. The Online Advance Registration Form (Part 1) must be submitted no later than March 7, 2012 at 5:00 p.m. to be eligible for participation. The Part 1 form will include basic information regarding the participant, an abstract for the work of art, available photos, sketches, or narrative describing the work, and a signed Statement of Originality.
  2. Students will be notified on or before March 7 as to whether their work of art was accepted for display and competition at the convention. 
  3. The work of art accompanied by the Official Registration Form (Part 2) must be submitted in person no later than 9:00 a.m. on Sunday March 18, 2011.  No exceptions taken. The works of art will be on display and voted on from 10:00 a.m. on Sunday March 18 through 10:00 a.m. Monday March 19.
  4. Alternatively, participants may ship the work of art in advance of the competition to be delivered to the following address by Thursday March 15 at 5pm:

Items will be kept in their original shipping container until the participant arrives at the convention to retrieve and unpack the item(s). ACI is not responsible for any work of art that is damaged during shipping or transporting of the item to the convention hotel from the above address. Access to advance shipped items will be permitted after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 17 at the convention hotel.

7. Compliance with Competition Rules

ACI reserves the right to perform detailed examination and check entries for compliance with the competition rules. Due to the complexity of this task, the examination may be done after the competition. If the examination shows that a participant did not follow the rules, he/she will be disqualified. CI Committee S 801 will further document recommendations to sanction the participant from participation in future competitions.

8. Participation

All colleges and universities are eligible for participation. The ACI Dallas Convention Committee plans to contact colleges and universities directly to advertise the competition.Contact will be made through the ACI student chapters or through ACI committee member’s relationships with faculty and staff.

    Note: The Faculty Advisor is responsible for confirming that the student(s) are undergraduate students at the time of this competition.
