Abstract:
The Tasman Bridge crosses the Derwent River, near Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. Bridge piles were constructed by grouting of preplaced aggregate encased in sacrificial steel tubes. The article describes an investigation to determine the quality of grouting, chloride ingress, and current condition of the reinforcement in the bridge piles after 48 years of service. Analyses of cores extracted from the bridge piles indicate that the preplaced aggregate method of construction produced dense, durable concrete suitable for marine exposure.
