Abstract:
The combinations of mineral and chemical admixtures often used in today’s concrete can alter the hydration of portland cement and produce unexpected setting and strength behavior in concrete. The effects of partial cement replacement with Class F or Class C fly ash and the effects of water-reducing and retarding admixtures on the heat release signature of two types of cement are discussed in this article. Practical guidelines for avoiding abnormal setting behavior are also presented.
