ACI Commemorative Lecture Series—RETIRED

Young Professional Essay Contest—RETIRED

ACI awards are granted by the Board of Direction on the recommendation of an Awards Committee. The designated recipients of the awards are invited to attend The ACI Concrete Convention in the spring to receive the awards.

Delmar L. Bloem Distinguished Service Award

The Institute established a Distinguished Service Award in 1969 to recognize noteworthy work on ACI technical committees. The name of the award was changed to the Delmar L. Bloem Distinguished Service Award in 1972 in honor of the late Delmar Bloem who had demonstrated, over a period of many years, the characteristics and dedication required for the award. The award is given to a current (or recent) chair of a technical committee, or under special circumstances, to deserving individuals other than committee chairs, in recognition of outstanding performance.

One award may be given each year; however, there may be none or more than one recipient in any particular year.

Nominators will submit to ACI Headquarters an email or letter emphasizing the chair or committee member's outstanding performance on a particular committee.

Nominations submitted by January 31 will be considered by TAC at the spring meeting. TAC approves the candidates at their summer meeting, and submits names and citations to the Board for approval in the fall. The awards are granted the following spring.

Graduate Student Convention Travel Stipend Program

The ACI Graduate Student Convention Stipend Contest, sponsored by ACI Committee S-805 Student Leadership Council, is open to those currently pursuing a graduate degree as a full-time student at an accredited university in a civil engineering or construction related program. Recipients will be reimbursed up to $1,000 USD, meant to support travel to attend an upcoming ACI Concrete Convention.

Applicants are required to submit a letter of support signed by the supervising faculty advisor along with a resume/CV. Final selection of the program recipients will be decided by a panel of ACI SYPAC Sub-Committee Members.

Pre-Convention

The recipients will be notified two weeks after the deadline and will be required to submit a headshot; biography of 150 words or less.

Post-Convention

The recipients will be required to submit a 1-page narrative report/testimonial about their experience at the ACI Convention. Additionally, the winners will submit a PDF report containing a detailed list and receipts associated with travel (hotel, airfare, ground transport). A reimbursement check will be issued via postal within 2-3 weeks following the convention.

Recipients will be announced on the ACI website and during the ACI Student Lunch and Awards Program during the convention.

Young Member Free Convention Registration ProgramOpen

ACI thrives on the collaborations of those with diverse skills, experience, and perspectives. To this end, the Women in ACI are dedicated to sharing the experience of professional and technical collaboration with emerging faces of concrete in the concrete industry by offering the one full registration to the ACI Concrete Convention, valued up to $800. This award is available 1 to 2 times per year based on available funds.

The recipient is responsible for making, and paying for, all other travel arrangements, including airfare, hotel accommodations, food allowance, etc. ACI Membership is not required to participate. The contest is only open to those who have been in a concrete- or construction-related industry for less than 8 years. Years spent as a full-time undergraduate student do not count toward that number. Any years spent studying as a student after achieving an undergraduate degree will count towards the 8-year requirement.

ACI Commemorative Lecture SeriesRetired

The R. E. Davis Lecture Series began in 1972 and was replaced by the Phil M. Ferguson Lecture Series in 1987. The ACI Commemorative Lecture Series replaced the expired Phil M. Ferguson Lecture Series in the fall of 1998. The lectures are funded through ACI's General Accounts.

The ACI Commemorative Lecture Series was established on a multi-year cycle to commemorate prominent deceased members. Each year, a speaker is selected by a board committee appointed by ACI's president, with the lecture being presented at the following fall convention. The first Commemorative Lecture Series (1998-2000) was in honor of George Winter. The second Commemorative Lecture Series (2001-2005) was in honor of Lewis H. Tuthill. The Third Commemorative Lecture Series was in honor of Hardy Cross. The Fourth Commemorative Lecture Series was in honor of Katharine and Bryant Mather.

The lecture subjects are chosen by the speaker and can relate to the entire range of Institute interest. The only qualification requirement for a speaker is that he or she is outstanding in the concrete field. An appropriate plaque is given to each speaker as a memento.

This award is no longer presented.

“Kind Gestures: Longtime ACI Members Shape the Career of Younger Generations” by Anahid A. Behrouzi

Anahid A. Behrouzi has been an Assistant Professor at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, CA, since 2016, where she teaches courses in reinforced concrete design as well as structural analysis and dynamics. Her current research work involves developing machine learning approaches to automate tagging of civil infrastructure damage in post-hazard images sourced from engineering reconnaissance teams and formal/social media platforms. Prior to her position at Cal Poly, she was a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she investigated the seismic response of non-planar reinforced concrete structural walls via large-scale testing and computer simulation. Behrouzi is a past two-time ACI Graduate Fellowship recipient and a member of the ACI Student and Young Professional Activities Committee; the ACI Scholarship Council; and ACI Committee 133, Disaster Reconnaissance.
