Description

This course covers the major changes in ACI 301-16 Sections 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 12 (Concrete Mixtures; Handling, Placing, and Constructing; Architectural Concrete; Lightweight Concrete; Mass Concrete; and Tilt-up Construction). This course also explains the updates to ACI 301 that include the latest research and accepted industry practice, the removal of redundancies, and provisions in mandatory language.

Some important changes in the 301-16 document described in this course are; (1) recognition that the ready mixed supplier is responsible for identifying and rating their aggregates regarding potential reaction with alkali solutions to form alkali-aggregate reactions (AAR) and alkali-silica reactions (ASR) prior to mixing and delivering; (2) change in concrete slump requirements from prescriptive to performance-based requirement, placing responsibility on the contractor; (3) changes in early-stage concrete curing to mitigate potential early stage shrinkage issues; (4) changes in the definition of lightweight concrete and mass concrete; and (5) for mass concrete placements, allowing different measures on measuring temperatures of placed mass concrete.

Table of Contents

Learning objectives:

1. Describe the changes to ACI 301-16 specifications regarding requirements for aggregates used in mixtures that have potential risk of forming alkali-aggregate reaction or alkali-silica reaction.

2. Compare at least three changes between ACI 301-10 and ACI 301-16 in delivering, handling, placing, and curing structural concrete.

3. Explain the importance of performing mock-up reviews for architectural concrete elements to deliver quality and to avoid unnecessary reconstruction costs.

4. Describe how the new specifications for placement of mass concrete better reflect industry practice and recent advancements in mass concrete placement experience and knowledge.
